2025Durante mi mes de viaje a Exmouth (Australia), creé una serie de obras que se suman al esfuerzo por incluir el Golfo de Exmouth dentro del área protegida por la UNESCO de Ningaloo Reef y el Parque Nacional Cape Range. El proyecto se inspira en los tres episodios documentales de Tim Winton titulados Ningaloo Nyinggulu.Una colección de prints de las principales criaturas marinas que habitan el Golfo de Exmouth. Sobre algunas, añadí en caligrafía algunos rasgos de las especies y su estado de conservación, con el fin de generar conciencia sobre la importancia de preservar este lugar, uno de los motores ecológicos y el corazón vivo de la región de Ningaloo.During my month in Exmouth, I created a series of works subscribing to the aim of including the Gulf of Exmouth within the UNESCO-protected area of Ningaloo Reef and Cape Range National Park. The project was inspired by Tim Winton’s three documentary episodes titled Ningaloo Nyinggulu. A collection of prints of the main creatures of the Gulf of Exmouth. On top of the prints, calligraphic notes describe certain features of the species and their conservation status, in an attempt to raise awareness of the significance of preserving this place as one of the engines and the living heart of the Ningaloo region.

2025Una serie de cianotipias que surge de la observación y el estudio de la fauna local durante el mes que viví en Antigua y Barbuda, un país caribeño situado en las Antillas Menores. Durante este tiempo, también di talleres en Rhythm of Blue Gallery y en la Iglesia Católica de Antigua para una comunidad local de mujeres mayores.A series of cyanotypes based on the observation and study of local fauna during the month I lived in Antigua and Barbuda, a Caribbean nation in the Lesser Antilles. During this time, I also led workshops at Rhythm of Blue Gallery and the Catholic Church of Antigua for a local community of older women.

	“This is a love story between two photographers, Sara and Albert, and the ocean and its creatures in Ningaloo Reef and Exmouth Gulf where they have been underwater photographers for four and nine years respectively. 
Their mission has been to raise awareness of the need to protect the ocean and this part of the Indian ocean in particular. To this end, Sara contributed videography to Tim Winton’s documentary Ningaloo while Albert arrived in Exmouth with the dream of swimming with the biggest fish in the world and the giant humpback whales which calve each year in the Exmouth Gulf.
 
These two kindred spirits met while working at the Exmouth dive and whale shark company and now follow their subjects in their boat Zanzara, cameras always at the ready.
In praise of their work and commitment I offer these two portraits to the Exmouth community.”

“Esta es una historia de amor entre dos fotógrafos, Sara y Albert, y el océano con todas sus criaturas, en Ningaloo Reef y Exmouth Gulf, donde han trabajado como fotógrafos submarinos durante cuatro y nueve años respectivamente.


Su misión ha sido concienciar sobre la necesidad de proteger el océano, y en particular esta parte del océano Índico. Con este objetivo, Sara contribuyó como videografa al documental Ningaloo de Tim Winton, y Albert llegó a Exmouth con el sueño de nadar con el pez más grande del mundo: las majestuosas ballenas jorobadas que cada año acuden a Exmouth Gulf para dar a luz.


Estos dos espíritus afines se conocieron trabajando en la empresa de buceo y tiburón ballena de Exmouth. Hoy les siguen a bordo de su barco, Zanzara, con las cámaras siempre listas. En reconocimiento a su trabajo y compromiso, dedico estos dos retratos a la comunidad de Exmouth.”

ENVIRONMENTAL ETCHING PROJECT TO PROTECT OCEANS

Técnica: Grabado Motivada por la fuerte necesidad de preservar el planeta frente a la destrucción masiva que la humanidad está llevando a cabo, creemos que como artistas tenemos la oportunidad y necesidad de expresar y a través del arte concienciar del grave problema. 

Ponemos nuestro foco de atención en el frágil hábitat del océano, su conservación y la presión para ampliar zonas como santuarios donde lase species puedan dejar de desaparecer.

Una visita a la Barrera de Coral en Queensland es suficiente para experimentar el fuerte deseo de proteger este medio natural y sus seres, ya que no como científico, así como artista. Recientemente Martin Sheen presenta en Australia y New Zeland la película The map to Paradise. Fuente de inspiración que asegura, como otros medios de expresión pueden llegar al gran público y acercarlo al problema desde una mirada positiva y esperanzadora.

 
Our motivation to start this Project is the upcoming movement that is taking place all over the world to preserve Nature. We want to focus in restoring the fragile habitats in Oceans. Their conservation, which is growing up as a great value for our society must be a right.

 
We have a responsibility as an artist to bring awareness to conserving the seas. From the position of being an artist, nor a biologist, scientist or a politician what we can do is create to call and communicate our aware about the urgent necessity to protect our marine life, which otherwise is the origin of life.

 
The project become to my mind from my first visit to the Barrier Reef in Queensland. I’ve never could not imagine such a beauty like this. I been inspired by the Martin Sheen’s film appeared the 25thof September The map to Paradise.

	Nuestra responsabilidad como artistas debe ser contribuir a desarrollar el compromiso de la conservación, y de hacer reflexionar sobre la relación de la humanidad con el medio natural. Así, concienciar de la súper polución o la súper explotación de los océanos.


Mi interés en la obtención de piezas de grabado que sean capaces de transmitir y comunicar tal belleza usando materiales no tóxicos, reciclando la misma plancha o utilizando papel fabricado a mano a partir de medios naturales hace que el Proyecto esté en conexión con mi necesidad expresiva.


	I realized that my contribution as an artist to extend the commitment we have as human beings must be something that makes people aware about the situation 
of over fishing and pollution that the sea is suffering. 

 
On the other hand, my passion for etching and painting depicts me into a necessity to express all these feelings through these materials without forgetting the purpose. I do consider myself a environmental rights defender.

Mi intención a desarrollar en el taller de grabado es trabajar solo con una gran plancha de hierro pura natural que será sometida a diversas técnicas ancestrales o contemporáneas de grabado como mezzotinta, punta seca, acuatinta, aguafuerte u otras, de tal manera que la riqueza en las diferentes series obtenidas entre cada proceso enriquezcan su resultado. 

Así como el concepto reducción de la plancha en grabado puedo utilizar el concepto devastación en la Naturaleza. Aún así, ésta tiene el poder de regenerar se si le damos una oportunidad como la plancha será capaz de desprender belleza en su último momento.


From this point my goal is to achieve the beauty of a piece of art using non toxic materials, as the natural beauty, and even reusing some of them from rubbish to made paper as a good support for etching on top.

 
In that way, my goal is working with only one large plate as a Nature pure metal which must be devastated by intaglio, mezzotint, acquafort, &#38;nbsp;dry point or several others&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;techniques to enhance her life with richness or simply to over devastated it. As we do with our Oceans, a series of prints in all of these different stages can be obtained to prove how the beauty of Marine Life can be regenerated and still be positive with our change as a society.

	Fills que s'endú el vent del mar cap a altres oceans llunyans, a
una gran illa, aquest cop. Fills amb els que connectem amb un fil invisible
però conscient, que marxen per donar mort a les pors i vèncer la incertesa del
desconegut deixant que l'instint sigui el seu far. Amor cap el mar i els seus
éssers que inspiren el cap i la fi d'un cabdell que ens manté en contacte. 
Com
Teseu, fent palès el seu valor, amb la càmera en mà, t'enfrontes a les
profunditats laberíntiques de Ningaloo Gulf darrera la bellesa de les criatures
marines, aconseguint despertar els instints expressius aquí a la Mediterrània
amb l'afany de protegir-los. Valor també d'Ariadna de deixar que Teseu mati el
seu germà. Amb el mateix sentiment que ens connecta genèticament, de tan lluny
et sento a prop mentre admiro la teva capacitat per disparar en el moment
precís, captant allò únic amb el segell característic del teu equilibri que
aporta l'harmonia al meu mon entròpic, el meu far.
A diferència d'Ariadna, abandonada a l'illa de Naxos, jo no sento
aquest abandonament tot i la llunyania, sinó que rebo la teva energia a través
d'aquest fil vermell generador que m'impulsa a la creació que espera ser
salvada per Dionís.&#38;nbsp;Amb el meu llenguatge, admirant tota la teva força
compositiva he estat capaç de sentir-me més a prop de l'emoció que transmeten
aquests grans éssers i que compartim i volem protegir en el nostre univers
aquàtic. Potser perquè a totes les Ariadnes les salva Dionís, el déu de la
embriaguesa, el déu de l'onatge bullent de la vida, el déu del fons del
patiment del món (Nietzsche dixit).&#38;nbsp;

I Dionís immortalitza Ariadna.


Carme Dapena


	Teseu, fill del rei Egeu, s’amaga amb 14 joves atenesos destinats
a ser presa del minotaure. És el tribut de la ciutat d’Atenesa la ciutat de
Cnossos. Teseu està disposat a matar-lo i d’aquesta manera alliberar el poble
atenenc. La princesa Ariadna, filla del rei de Creta i germana del minotaure,
s’enamora de Teseu. El laberint del palau de Cnossos és l’espai de captivitat
del minotaure. Ariadna, malgrat que estima profundament el germà, ajuda a Teseu
i li entrega un cabdell de fil: el fil d’Ariadna.
 Teseu entra al laberint i
dona mort al minotaure. Amb el fil d’Ariadna surt victoriós. Teseu és un heroi.
Però el rei Minos se n’adona de seguida de la matança i entra en còlera. Teseu
apura la seva fuga i amb ell marxa Ariadna que per amor ha traït al germà
estimat, la seva família, la seva terra i la seva ciutat. Però Ariadna no
arribarà a conèixer Atenes, la ciutat de Teseu. Quan desperta a la vora de la
platja veu el vaixell allunyar-se a l’horitzó impulsat per un misteriós vent.
Abandonada per Teseu a la illa de Naxos.

“Si us doneu un temps per a resseguir els darrers treballs de
Carme Dapena, podreu endevinar-hi un acostament a un concepte integral d'estar
(en la natura), plantejat com una plataforma des d'on realitzar immersions
creatives. 


Des d'allò macro, atmosferes denses i treballades capa a
capa, on la pintura desapareix a estones per cedir el protagonisme a
interpretacions quasi tàctils del pla pictòric; fins a allò micro, les
relacions empàtiques que l'artista estableix amb el fet vital que l'envolta, i
que agafen forma iconogràfica en animals i plantes. 


Els fils ens apareixen des de temps enrere, no només ara en
aquesta ocasió, estan filats des del treball personal, actiu des de la
plàstica, i doten d'un vestit visual a un pensament relacional amb el nostre
món, aquest que tenim ara i que, de manera progressiva, sembla canviar dia a
dia. La resistència segurament és un desig de no ser vençut, alhora que un
valor comunicatiu, de transmissió de missatges que, en el cas de la Carme,
sovint acaben apareixent rere els seus treballs.


Amb "El fil d'Ariadna" descendeix segurament a una
profunditat on els valors més propis de la superfície, el que és conscient, són
rellevats per intuïcions, relats inconscients, formes del silenci abissal,
individual, que tots tenim i que ella vol desvetllar.


L'art, finalment, com un
descabdellament valent, on la llum visualitza el que és íntim i genuí.”

“If you give yourselves time to trace the latest works of Carme Dapena, you will discern therein an approach to an 
all-encompassing concept of being (in nature), conceived as a platform from which to undertake creative immersions.


From the macro perspective, dense atmospheres, meticulously worked layer upon layer, where painting intermittently vanishes to yield the spotlight to almost tactile interpretations of the pictorial plane; to the micro, the empathetic connections the artist establishes with the vital matter that surrounds her, taking iconographic form in animals and plants.


The threads have been present for some time, not just now on this occasion; they are spun from personal labor, actively rooted in the realm of the plastic arts, and they clothe a visual garment on a relational thought with our world, the one we have now and which, progressively, seems to change day by day. Resistance is likely a desire not to be vanquished, as well as a communicative value, a means of conveying messages that, in Carme's case, often emerge behind her works.


With The Thread of Ariadne she descends, no doubt, to a depth where the values peculiar to the surface, the conscious, are supplanted by intuitions, unconscious narratives, forms of the abysmal, individual silence that we all possess and that she aims to unveil.

A partir los ecosistemas de bosque de eucaliptus de Wollami National Park (Sydney) y siempre desde una perspectiva ambientalista, mi trabajo intenta traducir lo que una pequeña oruga de una mariposa nocturna escribe en la corteza de cierta especie de eucaliptus endémicos de Australia. El zigzagueante trazo que la oruga deja en la piel del eucalipto intenta comunicarnos la historia del ciclo de la vida y la coexistencia y dependencia de los seres que habitan el planeta.


Nosotros, como parte de este planeta tenemos la responsabilidad de cooperar con la Madre Naturaleza desde una perspectiva biocéntrica y olvidar nuestra posición de antropocentrismo. En la búsqueda de esta colaboración radica mi interés y despierta mi curiosidad por mostrar ejemplos que nos brinda la propia naturaleza.


	Focusing in forest ecosystems and always from an environmental perspective, my art works for this project have been inspired by the esemic writing produced on the smooth bark of the Scribbly gums, the Australian eucalypts. 
The zigzag trucks made by a caterpillar tell us the ancient story of the insect’s life cycle. 

We, as humans have our responsibility with Mother Nature to respect and cooperate from a biocentric perspective and forget about our anthropogenic position. 
In the research of examples on this collaborations was the point where I found my inspiration.

Los “garabateos” grabados en la corteza de estos árboles me remiten a mi faceta como grabadora y calígrafa tratando de averiguar qué están tratando de decirnos ciertas especies de insectos a través de su interdependencia biológica.


Mi trabajo como pintora y grabadora me lleva a la creación a través de la tinción de papel japonés en el que interacciona la lluvia con sus infinitos tonos producidos en la superficie de los árboles. Creando una mímesis y despliegue de color como soporte para el descifrado de la escritura asémica al que mi intención traduce deliberadamente desde la propia emoción y defensa de la necesidad de la conciencia colectiva para proclamar la necesidad del biocentrismo y dejar de actuar desde el antropocentrismo.


El entorno de las Blue Mountains en BigCi, provoca automáticamente la necesidad de conciencia y comunicación de profundos sentimientos de protección de la Naturaleza. Desde el olor, el color, la sensación de paz nos lleva a la sensación de regalo de pertenencia a un sistema biológico.
	The scribbly dialect with a indecipherable pattern brings me to my calligraphy practice and from the mystery of the sense of the meaning of the etchings , I try to give information about&#38;nbsp; the idea of interdependent relations between biological relationship.


Moreover, my practice as a painter and printmaker pushes me to work with paper dyes and collage preparing the medium to calligraphy. 
Needless to say, the richness of colour observed after the rain and the infinite textures produced by the year bark cambium layer, reflects the result of my work.


The BigCi environment situation evokes rapidly the awareness and deep feelings towards Nature. 
Since the smell of eucalypts at their atmosphere, the colour of their beauty to the sense of peace, being part of the creation is a gift.

Des de la pràctica del gravat calcogràfic a color ( no tòxic), a una sola planxa i incorporant el missatge cal·ligràfic vehicular del projecte MPA-ENGAGE (Marin Protected Arees), de com a solució per mitigar les conseqüències del canvi climàtic.

From an activist perspective and the desire to build resilience and promote respect towards the marine environment as the largest ecosystem on Earth it is , I present the exhibition Act Mediterranean Art.

Using chalcographic engraving in color (non-toxic) on a single plate, I incorporate the calligraphic message of the MPA-ENGAGE project (Marine Protected Areas), as a solution to mitigate the consequences of climate change.

	Les papallones del Nord de Queensland sempre han atret emptomòlegs i artistes. La residència que porto a terme a Cairns, a Tanks Center és un Estudi colaboratiu amb el biòleg Santi Ruiz de l’Escola Betània Patmos a Barcelona. 

Fascinada pels&#38;nbsp; diferents estats de la vida d’una papallona i la seva semblança amb els meus estats personals de vida o de qualsevol ésser humà, desenvolupo un projecte cal·ligràfic, de gravat i pictòric utilitzant només paper japonès, aquarel·les, tintes de gravat amb bàrem i amb màxim respecte pel processos i materials de conservació, sorbre les exquisites espècies de papallones de Cairns. 


	The butterflies of Far North Queensland have always attracted the entomologists and artists alike – and occasionally, both.

Carme Dapena Gonzàlez is a painter, calligrapher, engraver, and educator, based in Spain. Her residency in Cairns is part of a collaborative study with biologist, Santi Ruiz for BetàniaPatmos School in Barcelona. Carme is fascinated with the stages of a butterfly’s life and their resemblance to her own personal stages through life. Using etching with watercolour and calligraphy, Carme will research our native butterfly species and produce an exquisite series that is both scientific and highly emotive.

VISITING ARTIST VOWS TO PROTECT NATURAL BEAUTY


	Since arriving in August from Barcelona as artist in residence at Tanks Arts Centre, Carme Dapena has been exceptionally busy and productive. On Wed 9 Oct at 6pm she launches her third exhibition of works, all created in Cairns, at Caffiend, 5/72-74 Grafton St, Cairns. Come along to meet Carme and celebrate the exhibition in the convivial atmosphere of Caffiend.the exhibition showing now until 22 Oct.On top of that she delivered watercolour workshops at Tanks and on 12/13 Oct will give an etching workshop at Inkmasters, 55 Greenslopes Street. Carme, now Inkmasters newest member, is a distinguished artist from Barcelona with degrees in art, paper conservation and education. She is also a sculptor and calligrapher.The exhibition expresses her continuing concerns about the relations between humanity and nature and how we can protect it in the face of climate change. She says, “Pure Nature is what moves me to create. The motivation for my work here has been my contemplation and admiration for the magnificent North Queensland environment, in particular its butterflies. My next project will include the precious birds and other insects, the lush plant life and superb corals.”
